Background Patterns
How a mistake here can ruin everything!
Busy patterns can make reading text a nightmare. Use them sparingly.
This text on the pattern is hard to read.
But the background pattern can still be a design element if you are clever.

Patterns can be repeating squares like the one above, or one-pixel-high slices that span the page. Like this page! This is a common trick to lay out a page. Surf the web and see how many designers use it! Note that this can backfire on you if you have a visitor with a really, really big monitor. The background pattern does repeat but with smaller monitors, no one will know! I usually use a 1 by 1200 pixel graphic to be safe.
