Scanning photos
An extra step or two makes 'em snappy!
I typically scan photos at 150 dpi, then reduce them to 72 dpi on Photoshop. Reduce them in steps and sharpen them as you go. This seems to lead to a better, clearer photo.
Note that even really tiny photos can be effective in web pages.

Crop photos down to their essentials.
Square photos are fine but there are lots of options for making photos more interesting. Most scanning software includes edge effects. Try oval vignettes for an old-fashioned look or display photos at an angle.

Bevel treatments and dropped shadows can make a photo look extra-special.

Oval vignettes are lovely with vintage photos.

Setting photos at an angle gets you away from the boxy look of most sites.
Try other shapes and effects to make your site more fun to look at! It will make your site above average without effort!
